DEADWOOD —Northern Hills state representatives have promised to do everything they can to bring the $5.4 million in bridge funding for the Sanford Lab home from Pierre.

HB 1083, the bill that would continue funding the Sanford Lab in Lead until the National Science Foundation makes its allocation in May did not have enough votes to pass Friday and will be reconsidered this week.

“I think everyone, including the governor, realizes the lab is not a stop and go project,” said Rep. Chuck Turbiville R-Deadwood. “If you stop the funding of the lab, years of work and millions of dollars will be wasted.”

Sen. Tom Nelson R-Lead said he is positive it will all work out. “This project is probably the only forward thinking, progressive and positive project that is on the governor’s book for funding right now,” Nelson said.

Rep. Fred Romkema R-Spearfish said at the end of the day, he predicts this program will be funded.

“I don’t know anyone that isn’t in favor of this bill,” Romkema said. “I’m confident that logic will prevail and we’ll get this done.”
